Great News for Chinese Ophthalmology: Professor Wang Zheng of Aier Eye Hospital Makes The Ophthalmologist’s 2026 Power List of the World’s Top 50 Most Influential Ophthalmologists

DATE:2026-04-13   HITS:165
Recently, The Ophthalmologist, an authoritative global media outlet in ophthalmology, officially released the 2026 Power List of the World’s Top 50 Most Influential Ophthalmologists. This list recognizes trailblazing figures who have achieved groundbreaking accomplishments and exerted profound industry-wide influence in global ophthalmology over the past 12 to 18 months.
Professor Wang Zheng, a renowned Chinese ophthalmologist, Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences, Academic Leader of the Refractive Surgery Group at Aier Eye Hospital Group, and Chief President of Aier Eye Hospital Group Guangdong Region, was honored with a spot on the list for his pioneering contributions to corneal refractive surgery, the formulation of industrial standards, and revolutionary advances in the treatment of refractory eye diseases.

He is the second Chinese ophthalmologist to receive this prestigious international honor, following Academician Wang Ningli. His inclusion not only highlights his outstanding academic standing but also signifies that China’s private medical sector, represented by Aier Eye Hospital Group, possesses robust capabilities to drive technological innovation in ophthalmology worldwide.

The Ophthalmologist Power List is known as the "Global Influential Hall of Fame Ranking" in the ophthalmology sector. Launched in 2014, it has been released for 13 consecutive editions and is universally recognized worldwide as a core benchmark for measuring the professional influence of ophthalmologists. The ranking aims to honor outstanding leaders who have driven innovations in ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment and advanced inclusive development of the industry across the globe over the past 12 to 18 months.

The competition for the 2026 selection was exceptionally fierce. The judging panel consists of world-leading ophthalmologists and adopts a rigorous anonymous review system. Moreover, the list has been downsized from the previous Top 100 to the Top 50. The evaluation criteria center on four core dimensions: originality of technology, value of clinical innovation, contribution to advancing the global industry, and inclusive value of diagnosis and treatment. After multiple rounds of stringent selection, only 50 specialists from 21 countries and regions across the globe stood out. Professor Wang Zheng’s inclusion not only reflects the international academic community’s high recognition of his personal accomplishments, but also signifies that China’s original medical insights and innovative private medical model are profoundly driving development and transformation within the global ophthalmology industry.

Thirty Years of Dedication

From Performing China’s First LASIK to Drafting National Industrial Standards

Professor Wang Zheng is undoubtedly a pioneer and leading authority in the field of corneal refractive surgery in China. Back in 1993, when refractive surgery was virtually non-existent domestically, he took a forward-looking vision and pioneered LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) procedures in China, ushering in a new era of myopia correction nationwide. Over the past three decades, he has remained at the forefront of clinical practice and ranks among the specialists who have performed the largest number of such surgeries in China. Countless successful clinical cases embody his dedication to the noble spirit of great physicians.

Beyond his clinical achievements, Professor Wang is also the founder of industrial norms for refractive eye care. As a core drafter, he participated in formulating the industry standard Quality Control of Excimer Laser Corneal Refractive Surgery issued by the former Ministry of Health of China. The release of this standard put an end to the lack of unified regulations governing refractive surgery, laying a fundamental foundation for the standardized and safe development of domestic refractive surgery. Its far-reaching impact endures to this day, safeguarding the visual health of hundreds of millions of patients.

While consolidating fundamental clinical techniques, Professor Wang Zheng has never ceased pursuing innovation. He has long dedicated himself to clinical practice and basic research on corneal diseases and corneal refractive surgery. He pioneered customized excimer laser corneal refractive surgery in China, greatly enhancing surgical precision and postoperative visual quality. Especially in refractive surgery for complex cases and the management of surgical complications, Professor Wang enjoys an outstanding international reputation and is hailed by peers as "the solver of intractable ophthalmic disorders".

What makes his achievements even more remarkable is his courage to break through medical boundaries and continuously scale new technological heights. His relentless pursuit of precision reflects utmost reverence and responsibility for patients’ eye health. He was the first to explore the application of excimer laser corneal refractive surgery in treating children’s anisometropic amblyopia. This groundbreaking intervention creates a brand-new therapeutic pathway for such refractory eye conditions that respond poorly to conventional treatments, restoring clear vision for countless children at risk of vision loss. This achievement not only demonstrates his consummate medical expertise but also embodies the noble compassion of a distinguished physician.

Numerous Prestigious Accolades
Elevating Private Medical Services to New Heights

Professor Wang Zheng’s outstanding contributions have earned him a host of top-tier honors, including the National Science and Technology Progress Award, Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, and the 6th Ding Ying Science and Technology Award. These accolades not only recognize his personal academic accomplishments, but also serve as powerful evidence that China’s refractive surgery technology has aligned with global standards and even shifted from following international trends to taking the lead worldwide.

As the Academic Leader of the Refractive Surgery Group at Aier Eye Hospital Group, Professor Wang integrates his profound academic expertise with Aier Eye’s extensive research platform. Leveraging the professional resource network of over 900 ophthalmic medical institutions of Aier Eye across the globe, he has built a high-level integrated innovation system combining industry, academia, research and clinical application. He has taken the lead in hosting four sessions of the International Refractive Surgery Symposium (IRSS) and five sessions of the International ICL Surgery Forum, and initiated the establishment of the Aier Global Advisory Committee for Refractive Surgery. He has successively released research reports such as the White Paper on Myopia Surgery among Chinese Patients and the China-Europe International Big Data White Paper on Myopia Surgery, facilitated the launch of multiple national key scientific research projects, and rapidly translated cutting-edge technologies into clinical practice. He faithfully lives up to the mission that "everyone, rich or poor, shall enjoy the right to eye health".

When speaking of these honors, Professor Wang stated that this recognition belongs to all frontline Chinese ophthalmologists and would not have been possible without the robust platform provided by Aier Eye Hospital Group. Moving forward, he will stay true to his original aspiration, commit himself to original innovation in ophthalmic technology, strengthen international exchanges and cooperation, and contribute Chinese wisdom and strength to building a global community of health for all and delivering clear vision to more people around the world.
